How To Paint Furniture

Whether your style is bold and vibrant or soft and subtle, a freshly painted dresser, chair, or table can instantly revive your interiors and introduce a splash of your favourite colours into your home.

We’ve gathered some of our favourite ways to add colour to furniture, along with a step-by-step guide to refreshing your pieces using our ultra-durable, scrubbable, stain-resistant interior finishes: Flat Eggshell and Modern Eggshell.

  • Ensure all surfaces are in good condition, clean, dry, and free from grease.

  • Lightly sand the surface to improve paint adhesion. If the piece has been painted before, remove as much loose or flaking paint as possible by scraping and sanding. Aim for a smooth finish by sanding and feathering the edges of any remaining paint. Carefully sand back any varnish or topcoat to remove any sheen.

  • New wood may contain knots that release sticky resin. If present, scrape away any excess and clean with methylated spirits or white spirit. Allow to dry, then apply Farrow & Ball Wood Primer & Undercoat to the treated areas.

  • Apply one full coat of Farrow & Ball Wood Primer & Undercoat, in the recommended tone for your chosen topcoat colour. Allow a minimum of 4 hours’ drying time before applying the finish.

  • Finish with two coats of Modern Eggshell or Flat Eggshell, depending on the sheen you prefer, allowing 4 hours between coats. For best results, use a high-quality fine-tipped synthetic brush, such as a Farrow & Ball 1", 1½", or 2" paint brush.
